The Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory (EECL) is a unique interdisciplinary research/education program at Colorado State University. Established in 1992, the EECL is now recognized as a leading global research program in advanced biofuels, engines and engine controls, smart grid technology, and energy for development. In 2011, the EECL was again named one of the top University research labs in the nation by Popular Science magazine because of its entrepreneurial approach, global influence, and, as a pioneer of student-centeredexperiential learning. As a result of this enterprising approach to energy technology R&D, the EECL and its affiliates have received international press (Time, The Economist, The New York Times, Wired, The Atlantic, NPR, TEDx, MSNBC, NBC, CBS; as well as global recognition (Scientific American 10, Rolex Award for Enterprise, World CleanEnergy Award, The Smithsonian Institute, Royal Award for Sustainability, Tech Museum Award, etc.) The labtypically employs 50-60 graduate and undergraduate students.

The Research Mission of the EECL is to “create innovative energy solutions and entrepreneurial models that benefit the human condition and achieve global impact.” This is addressed through:

 

? Basic and applied research – to develop new understanding of engines, energy conversion, smart grid electrification, biofuels and smart building systems.

 

? Technology development and dissemination – to turn EECL research into real-world commercial solutions through partnership with industry.

 

? Outreach and collaboration – to provide support to local, national and international government and environmental agencies, and to support the development of a clean energy economy in Fort Collins, Colorado and the nation.

 

? Education – dissemination of knowledge, training of people, interdisciplinary collaboration and the development and enhancement of student capabilities and opportunities.

Recently the Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory (EECL) was approached by a local company to test, characterize, and generate a computer model for an air/energy storage device. This testing would require the construction of a new project specific test cell that would capture and record over 40 different data acquisition channels. One of the most critical measurements required is device power. This measurement was achieved in two ways; first by using an electrical power meter that measure electrical voltage and current and second by measuring shaft torque and speed. With the test cell setup having limited space (<5 inches of shaft length), a small shaft diameter (1 ¼ inch diameter shaft), the ability to measure both positive and negative torques, and have a fine resolution with scalability the requirements for the torque measurement device are very restrictive. A Binsfeld TorqueTrak 10K Torque Telemetry System was acquired and installed for usage on this project. With its minimal strain gauge/transmitter foot print, small shaft diameter capability, 14 bit resolution, and adaptability into the rest of the data acquisition system this device has fulfilled all the requirements for this project.
